WHY IS THE RESEARCH BEING UNDERTAKEN?
The ASI breeding program has been heavily focused on POMS resistance as the primary trait for selection since 2014. The gains made in POMS resistance have been significant but required a “hiatus” of selection pressure for other commercially important traits. ASI success in breeding highly POMS resistant oysters have led to industry indicating that a return to the other traits is now required. Genomic technology allows faster genetic gains due to higher selection precision and should allow ASI to fast-track incorporation of the other traits back into the ASI families. This needs to be underpinned by a solid economic case and well-defined methodologies. An additional need that exists is the ability to measure subjective phenotypic traits such as meat condition, this is where machine learning may be a valuable assessment tool.
